Cohabiting Pension Rights
March 2nd, 2017
A Court of Appeal case has hugely improved the rights of cohabitees, says the Independent. In a recent judgement the Court held that a cohabitee was entitled to their partner’s employer scheme pension, even through they had not filled in a form the scheme administrators said was essential. With as many as 6 million people in the UK cohabiting, hundreds of thousands could benefit from the ruling. However, completing a nomination form is preferable to having to establish your rights after a partner’s death, since administrators will require proof of joint financial arrangements.
