Wessex Cancer Trust & Bruce Elkins
January 29th, 2016
Well-known fundraiser and accountant from top 20 firm, Wilkins Kennedy’s Southampton office, has handed over a £20,000 cheque to the Wessex Cancer Trust following a marathon of sporting challenges.
Bruce Elkins concluded his 25 years of fundraising on 11th October with a 25 mile walk, the final of many challenges for 2015, including swimming 25 miles, running 250 miles and cycling 2500 miles to raise £25,000. This brought his overall 25-year fundraising total to £250,000.
For his final challenge in aid of the Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity close to Bruce’s heart and one for the original cause for his fundraising 25 years ago, Bruce was joined by over 70 other walkers including work colleagues and colleagues from Nat West Bank, Radcliffe & Co (Life & Pension) and Paris Smith. In his final year, Bruce wanted to raise funds to fully equip the new extension at the Trust’s cancer support unit, the Waterside Cancer Support Centre, in Hythe in the New Forest.
Bruce made a visit to the Centre on Monday 18th January to hand over the cheque to the Centre manager at Wessex Cancer Trust, Hythe.
Bruce said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has been with me for every step of every challenge over the last 25 years. It’s easy to see that the Wessex Cancer Trust is a very worthy cause and it gives me great pleasure to see the result of the investment in the facility at the Centre.
“Whilst my days of challenges are over, I am happy to say that I will still be involved in charity work and along with keeping in touch with Wessex Cancer Trust, I will also be continuing my role as an ambassador for the Rose Road Association – another fantastic local cause.”
Kim Lawford of Wessex Cancer Trust said: “The donation from Bruce will be used for our Waterside Cancer Support Centre, a non-clinical drop in centre for the benefit of anyone living in the area of Waterside in the New Forest who is affected by cancer, and their families too. Our huge thanks go to Bruce for his efforts and the staff at Wilkins Kennedy who have provided additional sums towards the total amount – thank you all very much indeed!”
